My mother was Ann Wallis Brumby (Darling)
We are descended from Thomas Lyal Brumby,a native of Manchester England, that emigrated to South Carolina abt 1740 and settled in Georgetown,SC. His son Thomas married Susannah Greening. Thomas was appointed by Thomas Jefferson to the office of Surveyor of the Port of Charleston in 1803. They had five sons and two daughters. Their eighth child was Arnoldus Vanderhorst Brumby who married Ann Eliza Wallis. These are my great great grandparents. My question is do you have any history on My Thomas Brumby from Manchester? I have all the Brumby connections here. If I can help anyone else with names or dates I would do all I could to oblige. Thanks....

I'm the son of George Michael Brumby, born in London in 1954. My dads family hail from Lincolnshire, UK
A long time ago, a yorkshire army captain was posted to Australia. He took with him his prized horses. For reasons I don't know, he had to return to the UK and he released the horses into the wild. The stallions, being of a superior stock quickly became the lead stallions of wild heards and that is where the term 'Brumbies' come from. Hope this is of use to someone. Sorry I don't have more detailed information.
Love the site
Kind regards
Michael

Hi, I've just discovered that my husband Mike's great grandmother was a Brumby. She married Eardley Harrison in Horncastle in 1868 and appears in the 1871 census as Gertrude A Harrison, age 22,born Ailby, Lincs, while in the 1901 census she was Annie G Harrison, age 51. Eardley was born in Well, Lincs and worked as a corn merchant's traveller. He died in the Spilsby district in 1926 age 80. So far I haven't been able to track down anything further about Gertrude Annie, although IGI has a christening of an Ann Brumby in 1848 in Rigsby with Ailby, which is the right location and more-or-less the right date. Any further information gratefully received.
cheers, Linda Hall

Hi,
I'm currently doing my family tree on my dad's side, who's whole family is from Brumby and it's surrounding areas, and his great Grandmother was Martha Skinner (nee Brumby). She was born in Winteringham in the last quarter of 1861 to George Brumby and Mary Ann Brumby (nee Thorley). Martha's siblings were:
John William Brumby - born 1860
Thomas Brumby - born 1864
Mary Ann Brumby - bron 1867
Henry R Brumby - born 1870
Marshall Brumby - born 1872
Julia Brumby - born 1875
Martha's father George was born at the beginning of 1838 in Winteringham to William and Ann Brumby. George's siblings were:
William Brumby - born 1829
John Brumby - born 1831
James Brumby 1833
Thomas Brumby - born 1835
Charles Brumby - born 1840
Unfortunately none of these people seem to appear on this website, and I would be very grateful if anyone had anymore information on them.

Whilst researching my Hartley and Harrington ancestors from Cumberland and Liverpool respectively I have come across an individual with the middle name Brumby and wondering if that was an earlier ancestors surname? If anyone has any connection with those areas I'd love to hear from them. As far as I know, I have no connection to Lincolnshire...

They had seven children Alan, Betty, George, Colin, Deliah, John, Gordon. Sadly only one, Alan, had a boy which is myself Paul born in 1970 who now has two boys, Connor 1995 and Jordan 1999, the Brumbys keep on going. I will try to find out more info, birth places, birth dates if that would be of help.

I am related to Robert Brumby and Hannah Hodgetts through their daughter Hannah who married John Bull. I was wondering if there were any photos which have come to hand of that generation of Brumbys in Australia? I have a very old photo on glass taken around 1860 which is not named and I was wondering if there is anything to compare it with for likeness. Hannah and John Bull left Australia for New Zealand in 1865 and I wondered if it was given to her as a gift. Would love to know if anyone has a photo to compare it with.

Hi Ian, have just had a really good look at your website - it is fascinating. I think there may be a connection somewhere, because some of my ancestors came from East Retford. The Brumby name is certainly very extensive and I am proud to have been born a Brumby. Incidentally, the last message posted on here is from the grandaughter of my Uncle Ronnie. So Nicola, if you are looking at this, get in touch, we can share information.
Ian keep up the good work and I will send my family history details to you soon (when I've mastered the best way to sort it and send it!)
Regards....Angela
